The 76-year-old woman who was pronounced dead earlier this month and surprised her family and the world by waking up in her coffin during her wake, has died after seven days in an intensive care unit in Ecuador.
Bella Montoya died of an ischemic stroke after spending a week under “permanent surveillance” in intensive care, Ecuador’s health ministry said.
Gilbert, the older woman’s son, says he has not yet received a report from authorities on the medical explanation of what happened, and guarantees things “will not stay that way”. The family is still trying to identify the doctor who pronounced Bella dead.
On June 9, Bella Montoya woke up in a coffin after five hours of waking up, after being admitted to the public hospital in Ecuador, where she was pronounced dead.
A video released to Twitter shows Bella Montoya, 76, in the already open coffin breathing labored after prolonged confinement, as two men help her out of the scene. The older woman knocked on the coffin, her son, Gilbert Balberán, said.
“They gave us a death certificate,” Balberán said in a video released by the local press. Several Ecuadorian media celebrated the “resurrection” of the elderly woman.
