Italy directs Open Arms ship to distant port to disembark 117 migrants

The Italian authorities indicated this Sunday to the boat of the Spanish non-governmental organization (NGO) Open Arms the port of Livorno, in the north of the country, for the disembarkation of the 117 migrants rescued on Saturday in the central Mediterranean.

The NGO denounced on its social networks that the indicated port is 650 miles (about 950 kilometers) from its current position, much closer to the island of Sicily, which is about 250 miles (about 365 kilometers) away.

“It is four days of navigation, three times further than the nearest safe port, in Sicily, and which should have been indicated, as defined in international treaties. It is always the most vulnerable who suffer the most,” lamented Open Arms.

On board are 117 migrants, including 31 minors, one under the age of three, and 25 women, all rescued in international waters of the central Mediterranean, and coming from Sudan, Eritrea and Libya.

Open Arms considered the assigned port a “punishment”.

The far-right government of Georgia Meloni has criticized these humanitarian organizations, which it accuses of promoting the migration phenomenon.

In recent times, the Italian government has chosen to designate farther ports for the disembarkation of rescued migrants, with the aim of alleviating the situation in the reception centers in the south, where they used to take them.
