Tokyo and kyiv agree cooperation to rebuild Ukrainian infrastructure

Japan and Ukraine on Monday signed a cooperation memorandum on rebuilding Ukrainian infrastructure affected by the Russian invasion, based on the experience of Japanese experts after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

Ukraine’s Minister of Infrastructure Oleksandr Kubrakov received from Japan’s Minister of Reconstruction Hiromichi Watanabe policy and knowledge recommendations for sustainable reconstruction from the experience of the earthquake that led to the Fukushima Daichii nuclear power plant disaster.

“War does not last forever, and we need… to rebuild all the destroyed infrastructure, homes and economy. Japan’s knowledge is extremely important and unique in the world,” Kubrakov said.

For his part, Watanabe indicated that, “for reconstruction, it is essential not only to improve infrastructure, but also to strengthen resilience and the capacity to respond to future emergencies.”

The two offices pledged to share information and experiences in terms of the development of the reconstruction policy, encourage mutual participation in technical workshops and exhibitions, as well as any other form of cooperation that is decided between the two parties, according to a statement.
