A woman was convicted on Tuesday, September 23, having killed her two children and hidden her bodies for several years in a storage box, after the so -called “suitcase murders” in New Zealand.
The case had reached the headlines at the time of the discovery, in August 2022, of the remains of the two children of 6 and 8 years distributed in suitcases stored in a furniture guard in Auckland.
Quickly identified as the mother of the children and suspect of murders, Hakyung Lee, citizen of New Zealand, had been extradited the same year from South Korea, a country he was and where he had taken from. Researchers believe that children died three to four years before the discovery of the bodies.
Life Prison incurred
The defense lawyers declared an alteration of their client’s discernment, advancing that he had fallen into a depressed spiral after the death of her husband in 2017. A discussion swept by the Prosecutor’s Office, according to whom “deliberately murdered” their children, Mini and Yuna.
The defendant, who recognized the facts, was declared guilty after two hours of deliberations by the jury of the Superior Court of Auckland, the metropolis in the north of the country.
Hakyung Lee, who faces life for life with a security period of at least ten years, will experience his sentence in November.
Throughout the trial that opened on September 8, the defendant remained in his head down and his hair hid his face, without speaking. In support of his accusation, the Prosecutor’s Office emphasized that he had hidden the bodies and fled the country.
