Indian low-cost carrier IndiGo announced on Monday that it has ordered 500 aircraft from the Airbus A320neo family, the largest contract by volume to date in civil aviation.
This “historic” order, for a list price of USD 55 billion (approximately EUR 50 billion), was announced on the first day of the Paris Air Show by the Executive Chairman (CEO) of IndiGo, Pieter Elbers, in the presence of the CEO of Airbus, Guillaume Faury.
The aircraft are expected to be delivered between 2030 and 2035.
These new aircraft – the A320neo family also includes the A321neo, with increased passenger capacity – bring the total number of models of this type ordered by the Indian company to 1,230, which aims to capitalize on the exponential growth in air travel demand in India.
Another Indian company, Air India, was responsible for the largest civil aircraft order in history so far, 470 units, formalized last February, but split between 250 aircraft from Airbus and 220 aircraft from US competitor Boeing.
IndiGo currently has over 250 aircraft in the A320neo family.
