A submersible used to take people to see the wreckage of the Titanic went missing on Monday. According to the BBC, an operation led by the Boston Coast Guard is currently underway to locate the ship. The shipwreck of the famous ocean liner, located in 1985, is located about 600 km southeast of Newfoundland (Canada).
As the BBC points out, small submersibles occasionally carry tourists and experts to view the remains of the famous ship. OceanGate Expeditions, a private company that organizes underwater expeditions, confirmed ownership of the lost device.
Up to five people in the submersible
However, the company did not specify the number of people on board. On board the submersible in question, called Titan, a maximum of five people can take place.
“We are exploring and mobilizing all possible options to safely return crew members,” OceanGate Expeditions said in a statement. “Our focus is on them and their families.”
A dive to view the wreckage of the Titanic lasts about eight hours, the time it takes to descend to almost 4,000 meters deep and then surface.
A $250,000 expedition
In total, each participant must pay $250.00 to participate in the expedition, which lasts just over a week.
“Among our clients, of course, we have Titanic enthusiasts. We had people who had mortgaged their houses to come, explained the CEO of OceanGate Expeditions in an interview with CBS last year. Others who did not think twice about a trip. A man I had just won the lottery, for example.
The Titanic sank in the Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14-15, 1912 during her maiden cruise from Southampton to New York. Some 1,500 people between passengers and crew died in this sinking.
