A U.S. federal judge on Monday approved a request from special counsel Jack Smith to bar former President Donald Trump from disclosing confidential information about the trial in the case with classified documents.
“The discovered material, together with any information derived from it, must not be released to the public, the media or on any social media platform without prior notice and permission from the court.”judge Bruce Reinhart ruled in his decision, according to a report by North American television channel NBC.
The judge explained that the defendants – Trump and his adviser Walt Nauta, who is also being charged in this case – will only be able to access information from the court proceedings under the direct supervision of his legal team and will not be able to keep copies of the material.
In the event of violation of the warrant requested by Special Counsel Smith, the two defendants could face criminal charges of contempt of court.
The charges against Trump range from willful withholding of national security information to conspiracy to obstruct justice in connection with the investigation of the various classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago, Florida, residence.
The former president kept boxes in various places in his house – such as his bedroom or one of his offices, but also the bathroom – and was also accused of showing secret materials to several people.
