This Tuesday, the United Nations commemorates World Refugee Day, highlighting the power of inclusion this year, and initiatives by non-governmental organizations in Portugal are also planned to discuss the issue and honor refugees.
Proclaimed in 2000, World Refugee Day is marked by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, focusing on the themes of the power of inclusion and solutions for refugees.
In Portugal, the JRS – Jesuit Refugee Service and the Refugee Support Platform organized an event on the theme “Solidarity without borders, a world without barriers”, which takes place in the late afternoon on the Campolide campus of the Universidade New from Lisbon.
Between the two debate panels on the importance of solidarity in Europe, personalities such as the Secretary of State for Integration and Migrations, Isabel Rodrigues, the researcher at the Faculty of Law of the Universidade Nova, Emellin de Oliveira, and representatives of other organizations Non-governmental organizations and refugees participate.
In Cascais, the Helpo Association will deliver 64 food baskets to Ukrainian, Syrian and Afghan refugee families in the municipality.
The Camões Institute organizes an event at the Portuguese Cultural Center in Luanda, Angola, with an exhibition of products made by refugees and the screening of the film “As Nadadoras”, which tells the story of the Olympic swimmer Yusra Mardini who, in 2015, she fled Syria with her sister and crossed the Aegean Sea on a boat with dozens of refugees to reach Europe.
World Refugee Day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2000 with the aim of highlighting the courage, rights, needs and resilience of refugees.
