The trial of former US President Donald Trump for illegally keeping confidential documents in his home will take place in Miami, Florida, from August 14.
In an order signed this Tuesday, the case’s chief judge, Aileen Cannon, has ruled that the deadline for conducting the trial is two weeks from Aug. 14, adding that if work is delayed for any reason , it should be done as soon as possible.
The deadline for the defense and prosecutors to file submissions related to the trial ends on July 24, and a hearing will be held on August 8 to discuss any timing issues.
Special counsel Jack Smith, in charge of the investigation, promised that the trial of Trump and his adviser Walt Nauta, accused of aiding and abetting the former president, would proceed swiftly and respect “the public interest and the rights of the defendants.” .
This month, courts in Miami charged Trump with 37 federal crimes for illegally holding official records after leaving the presidency of the United States (20017-2021).
Of the 37 charges – of which Trump has pleaded not guilty – 31 are for knowingly withholding documents related to US national security, but the former president also faces obstruction of justice and willful withholding of documents.
Some of these crimes carry a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
Trump became the first president or former president in U.S. history to face criminal charges in federal court.
