Portuguese dies aboard fishing vessel off Uruguay

A 48-year-old Portuguese died this weekend aboard a Portuguese-flagged fishing vessel where he worked, when it was off the coast of Uruguay, a family member told the Lusa agency today.

The same source said the circumstances surrounding the death of this Azores man are still unknown and the family was informed of the situation on Monday.

The vessel is a fishing boat named “Calvão,” with a Portuguese flag and owned by the Aveiro company António Conde & Companhia, SA, he added.

The fishing vessel will dock in Montevideo, Uruguay, this Wednesday, the family member added.

The Calvão, specialized in trawling and purse seining, was built in 1977 in the shipyards of Viana do Castelo for the Aveiro Fishing Company. It is known to operate in the South Atlantic from the port of Montevideo, Uruguay.

Lusa tried to obtain information from the company in the Aveiro district, but the administration refused to give a statement.

The Foreign Ministry contacted Lusa and said the “Portuguese Embassy in Montevideo is monitoring the situation and cooperating with all necessary steps”.
