The Russian president said on Wednesday that Russia’s new-generation Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missiles, capable of carrying 10 or more nuclear warheads, will soon enter combat service. The information is brought forward by Reuters.
Speaking at a ceremony for recent graduates of a military academy, Vladimir Putin stressed the importance of the nuclear triad, referring to the ability to launch nuclear ballistic missiles from sea, land and air.
“The main task here is the development of the nuclear triad, which is a fundamental guarantor of Russia’s military security and global stability,” Vladimir Putin said during the speech.
Putin stated that “About half of the units and formations of the strategic missile forces are equipped with the latest Yars systems, and the troops are being re-equipped with modern missile systems with the Avangard hypersonic warhead.”
The Russian head of state announced that the first Sarmat launchers will be used in combat “in the near future”.
Also present at the ceremony, Russia’s defense minister, quoted by The Guardian, told students at the military academy that the “collective West” was waging a “real war” against Russia.
The US president, remember, said this week that Putin’s threat to use tactical nuclear weapons is “real,” days after Russia began transferring nuclear weapons to Belarus.
US diplomatic chief Antony Blinken said the transfer of such weapons to Belarus was yet another “provocation” by the Kremlin and an “irresponsible decision” by Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko.
