At least two Hungarian soldiers were killed this Wednesday and a third is missing after a military helicopter crashed into the bottom of a canyon in a mountainous region in Croatia, official sources said.
The head of the Croatian mountain rescue service, Josip Brozicevic, stated that the fragments of the device were found in the Cikola river canyon, near Drnis, 50 kilometers from the Adriatic coast.
“The bodies of two crew members have also been found,” the official said, adding that “the search continues to find the third crew member” of the helicopter.
Hungary’s Defense Ministry confirmed the incident, specifying that two helicopters were participating in a training mission when one of the devices crashed “under unknown circumstances”.
In a statement, the Hungarian ministry said it “immediately started informing the families”.
The Croatian Defense Ministry said it had mobilized an aircraft and a helicopter to take part in the search and rescue operations.
Croatia joined NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Western Defense Bloc) in 2009 and regularly organizes military maneuvers with its Atlantic Alliance partners.
