The United States authorized for the first time the commercialization of chicken meat created in the laboratory by two companies, announced this Thursday a spokesman for the Department of Agriculture (USDA, in its acronym in English).
The USDA has inspected and approved the food hygiene systems of Upside Foods and Good Meat, whose products will be quickly available in some restaurants, the companies have already said.
In November, the companies had obtained clearance from the US Food Safety Agency (FDA), while last week the USDA approved the conformance designations.
Uma Valeti, founder and CEO of Upside Foods, hailed the decision as “a big step towards a more enduring future.”
Josh Tetrick, co-founder and CEO of Eat Just, which owns Good Meat, added: “We are the only company selling lab-grown meat in the world since our launch in Singapore in 2020, and we are now licensed to do so.” in the first world power”.
Upside Foods has already received the first order, which came from French chef Dominique Crenn’s Michelin-starred restaurant in San Francisco.
For its part, the first supply of Buena Carne must go to the ‘chef’ José Andrés.
