At least 172 migrants were rescued alive by two humanitarian organizations off Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea. The migrants, mostly of African origin, travel in seven boats.
“Aita Mari rescued 172 people in a joint operation with Nadir. Seven boats with 294 people were in serious danger in the southwest of Lampedusa. The Italian Coast Guard supported the operation,” writes the non-governmental organization in a note on social networks. quoted by the EFE agency.
On the other hand, the non-governmental organization Resqship, responsible for the ship Nadir, said that the Italian authorities took several hours to respond to the request for help.
In total, both organizations were assisting almost 300 people, but only 172 were rescued and are already on board humanitarian ships.
Until now, the port through which these immigrants will disembark has not been indicated.
This Thursday marks a week since the tragic sinking of a ship with some 750 migrants off the coast of Greece. More than 80 people died, a hundred were rescued alive and the rest are reported missing.
