Trump-allied congressmen begin impeachment proceedings against Biden

The Republicans in the United States Congress took this Friday a first step to start a possible process of the impeachment process [destituição] against President Joe Biden, requested by a group of supporters of Donald Trump.

These congressmen accuse the Democratic leader of being responsible for an invasion on the border between the United States and Mexico, due to his immigration policy.

The United States Constitution provides that Congress may impeach the president with “treason, bribery, or other serious crimes and misdemeanors.”

President Biden “has endangered the security of the United States and the health of the American people,” defended Congresswoman Lauren Boebert, in the indictment.

The Colorado Republican believes the White House occupant deserves to be removed from office for that reason.

However, a formal impeachment process remains highly hypothetical thus far, due to a lack of political support.

The rest of the Republican opposition is currently refusing to venture into this field, for fear of turning the procedure into a purely partisan exercise.

Rather than decide directly on the impeachment process, Republicans in the lower house of Congress decided Friday to go through a committee vote first, stalling the move by Trump allies.

Democrats, for their part, spoke out against the impeachment process.

No president has been impeached in American history, although three have been impeached: Andrew Johnson in 1868, Bill Clinton in 1998, and Donald Trump in 2019 and 2021, all of whom were ultimately acquitted.

Richard Nixon chose to resign in 1974 to avoid guaranteed impeachment by Congress over the Watergate scandal.
