“Wagner’s rebellion shows the divisions within the Russian camp,” Emmanuel Macron estimated this Sunday in a daily interview Provence.
The Head of State spoke before his visit to Marseille for three days. He took the opportunity to comment on the rebellion of the Wagner paramilitary group in Russia.
A Justification for Western Aid to Ukraine
Emmanuel Macron claims to have “followed events hour by hour, together with France’s main partners”. The day before he had already stated that he was closely monitoring the situation. In particular, he had spoken on the phone with his American counterpart Joe Biden.
The president is cautious, “because the situation continues to evolve.”
“But it shows the divisions that exist within the Russian camp, the fragility of both their armies and auxiliary forces like the Wagner group,” he said.
The head of US diplomacy, Antony Blinken, had also estimated this Sunday that the aborted coup by the head of the Wagner group, Evguéni Prigojine, reveals “real cracks” that reach President Vladimir Putin.
For Emmanuel Macron, this situation reinforces the importance of Western aid to Ukraine: “All this should make us very vigilant and fully justify the support we provide to the Ukrainians in their resistance.”
