China regards Wagner group uprising as “Russia’s internal affair”

The Chinese government this Monday considered the uprising launched Saturday by the leader of the Wagner group, Yevgeni Prigozhin, “an internal affair of Russia”, after authorities announced an agreement to halt mercenary advances on Moscow.

“As a friendly neighbor and strategic partner in the new era, China supports and believes that Russia can maintain national stability and achieve development and prosperity,” said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during the initial assessment. by Beijing of what happened.

Speaking at a press conference, Mao Ning said the two countries are “closely and closely communicating at all levels”, underlining that China has “no judgment to make” over the uprising launched by Prigozhin.

Hours after the uprising began and as units of the Wagner group advanced on Moscow, the Kremlin announced an agreement involving Prigozhin’s departure for Belarus, the withdrawal of charges of treason and a guarantee that members of the insurgency mercenary group would not be convicted of their actions.

Following the agreement, Prigozhin ordered members of the group to abandon the positions they had held during their advance, including the withdrawal from the city center of Rostov-on-Don, in order to ease tensions arising from the fight against the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and Army of Russia in the context of the invasion of Ukraine launched in February 2022 on the orders of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
