The US Coast Guard announced on Sunday an investigation into the implosion that destroyed the submarine Titan and killed five people during an expedition to the Titanic wreckage area.
He said he had created a Marine Research Council (MBI), the highest level of research, into the North Atlantic tragedy that drew global attention.
“My primary goal is to prevent a similar incident with the necessary recommendations to improve maritime domain security around the world,” Coast Guard chief investigator Jason Neubauer said at a press briefing in Boston.
“MBI is already in the early stages of evidence gathering, including rescue operations from the wreckage at the scene of the incident,” he added.
Neubauer said the US investigation could also make recommendations about possible civil or criminal sanctions “if necessary”.
Titan was reported missing on June 18, and the U.S. Coast Guard announced last Thursday that the five people aboard the submarine had died after a “catastrophic implosion.”
A debris field has been found at the bottom of the sea 500 meters from the bow of the Titanic, which is nearly four kilometers deep and 600 km off the coast of Newfoundland, Canada.
By the way, Canada, which helped search for the submarine, also announced an investigation.
The Canadian-flagged cargo ship Polar Prince towed the Titan out to sea, but lost contact with the submarine an hour and 45 minutes after it began to descend into the Titanic’s wreckage area.
The announcement of the implosion ended a multinational search and rescue operation that attracted worldwide attention.
