Anger in Italy after a tourist was filmed carving his name into the walls of the Colosseum

The young man was filmed carving his name and that of his partner into the 2,000-year-old monument.

A lack of civility that made the government react. In Italy, a video of a tourist defacing the walls of the Colosseum in Rome with a key has gone viral on social media.

The footage shows a young man scratching a stone from the 2,000-year-old monument to inscribe his and his partner’s names: “Ivan+Haley 23.” In the background, we can hear someone insulting the tourist, who turns to the camera smiling.

The Minister of Culture denounces an “undignified” gesture

A sequence that the Italian authorities did not like at all, who reacted through the voice of the Minister of Culture Gennaro Sangiuliano. “I consider it extremely serious, unworthy and highly uncivil for a tourist to degrade one of the most famous places in the world, the Colosseum, to engrave the name of his girlfriend on it,” the Minister reacted on Twitter.

“I hope that the person who did this is identified and punished according to our laws,” he concluded.

According to the Italian news agency Ansa, the Colosseum archaeological park authority filed a complaint on June 25, two days after the video was posted online. The tourist, whose identity has not been revealed, risks a fine of up to 15,000 euros and five years in prison.

This is the fourth complaint filed for degradation of the Colosseum since the beginning of 2023, reports Ansa.
