Taiwan detects two Russian warships off the island’s coast

Taiwan detected two Russian warships off the coast on Tuesday, the island’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday, responding by sending ships and planes to track Russian movements.

The Russian frigates were “detected sailing from north to south in the waters” off Taiwan’s east coast at 11 p.m. Tuesday (3 p.m. Lisbon time), the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the Taiwan Armed Forces had been monitoring the situation and had responded by deploying planes and ships and activating ground-based missile systems.

For months, Taiwan has recorded the presence of Chinese warships and planes around the island every day, but the presence of Russian vessels is rare.

A “detachment of warships from the Pacific Fleet entered the Philippine Sea after crossing the South China Sea,” also known as the South China Sea, the official Russian news agency Interfax said.

The ships carried out various maneuvers, including “a simulated naval battle to repel a missile attack from a fictitious enemy from the sea,” according to Interfax.

Like the United States, Taipei’s main ally, and many European countries, Taiwan has imposed sanctions on Moscow since the invasion of Ukraine, mainly on the export of components for computers and machines, a sector in which the island stands out.
