Brazil’s vice president says Bolsonaro is not an electoral problem

Brazil’s vice president said this Wednesday he has no electoral concerns with former president Jair Bolsonaro, who lost the election when he “used and abused” power and now risks losing his reelection.

Jair Bolsonaro is on trial for electoral abuse and risks being considered unfit, according to the verdict, scheduled for Thursday, because “no one is above the law”.

“We face President Bolsonaro as president, who uses and abuses the machine [eleitoral]. About 4% of GDP was used for [ele] win the election, 400 billion reais more, and we won the election. Now imagine he is out of government”he said, emphasizing that the current executive, led by Lula da Silva, is not afraid to face the leader of the Brazilian right again.

For the ruler, the current executive has no concerns “of an electoral nature” with regard to the opponent, rejecting that these judicial proceedings are motivated by political reasons.

In an interview with Lusa in Lisbon, Geraldo Alkmin, who is also Minister of Development, Industry, Trade and Services, warned that “no one is above the law”, and regardless of the court decision that comes out of the trial, on Thursday “is to fulfill “.

Jair Bolsonaro is charged with abuse of power and the court’s final verdict could rule him ineligible.

“He has the right to defense, like any citizen, and the court decision is respected and executed”emphasized Geraldo Alkmin, who did not want to talk about what he expects from the court decision.

“Let’s wait (…). Now everyone is under the law. This is a republic and this is a democracy”he stressed.

If the decision doesn’t qualify, Alkmin said he doesn’t know how much it could affect the space of the Brazilian right at the moment.

“I don’t know who the other leaders are,” he said, emphasizing that “it is too early to analyze the future”.

The main thing, according to Brazil’s Vice President, is that “President Lula has saved Brazilian democracy. That is a fact. And he is carrying out structural reforms and taking care of what matters, which is the quality of life of the people”he concluded.
