ChatGPT in US court for privacy and copyright violation

A California-based law firm in the United States has filed a class action lawsuit against OpenAI, creator of the ChatGPT chatbot, for violating the privacy or copyright of thousands of internet users.

The data extracted from the internet to train artificial intelligence prompted the lawsuit on Wednesday in a federal court in Northern California against the US artificial intelligence research laboratory OpenAI.

The law firm expresses a desire to “represent real people whose information has been stolen and inappropriately commercially misused to create this very powerful technology” in a post on its website.

According to the statement, the lab is accused of “stealing private information” from hundreds of millions of Internet users, including children of all ages, to improve and develop technology for profit.

In November, OpenAI released its AI human-computer conversation (chatbot) tool, ChatGPT, a text-generating tool that became popular, made it public and free, as well as others that let you generate photos and videos from texts.

The lawsuit focuses on the release of “generative” artificial intelligence (AI) tools, such as “chatbots” (ChatGPT) and image generators that create original content from existing data pulled from the Internet.

These tools are powered by human information, such as private conversations and medical records, which in many cases have been obtained without the consent of the authors.

The law firm points out that the lawsuit points to the need for “immediate legal intervention” to protect human interests and values against the threat posed by AI to “exploit people without regard to their well-being or consent.”

Moreover, he points out that if these technologies are not regularized, specialists already envision a catastrophic scenario that could culminate in the extinction of the human species “as a threat to its objectives”.

OpenAI has previously been accused of improperly monitoring open source code (Github) to train its AI systems, and this month a radio host sued the lab for defamation, alleging ChatGPT falsely produced a text accusing it of fraud.
