Bolsonaro is one vote away from being ineligible

Three electoral court judges voted this Thursday, the 29th, in favor of banning Jair Bolsonaro until 2030, in a trial taking place in Brasília. And one voted against. Since the college consists of seven judges, one more vote, of the three remaining, is enough to defeat the former president.

The process’s rapporteur, Benedito Gonçalves, voted for ineligibility for more than four hours on Wednesday, May 28. On Thursday, Raul Araújo disagreed. But Floriano Marques and André Tavares followed the reporter and came to a provisional result of 3-1.

When Carmen Lúcia was due to vote, the president of the court, Alexandre de Moraes, decided to close the session and continue this Friday the 30th from 4 p.m. in Lisbon.

Most analysts believe that among the judges who have not yet decided, both Carmen and Moraes will vote against Bolsonaro and Nunes Marques, so the exclusion will be a matter of hours.

With 16 actions against Bolsonaro in the electoral court, it specifically refers to a meeting with ambassadors held in July 2022 with the aim of attacking without evidence the electronic voting system used in Brazil. According to the PDT, party of then pre-candidate Ciro Gomes, this meeting is an “abuse of political power” and “improper use of means of communication”.
