Macron condemns the “unacceptable exploitation of the death of a teenager” but does not declare a state of emergency

French President Emmanuel Macron has decided not to decree a state of emergency in the country to restore order after the wave of protests in recent days, triggered by the death of a teenager shot by police in Nanterre.

Speaking to the country after a meeting of the emergency council, Macron condemned the “unacceptable exploitation of the death of a teenager” with acts of violence, as well as the “imitation of violence” by many who take advantage of the protests to sow the chaos and disorder. . .

The French president announced a reinforcement of the police forces in the streets, assured that the authorities will remain attentive to future developments, both in the streets and on social networks, identifying the perpetrators of the violence.

Macron also called on parents to keep young people off the streets.

In the last of three consecutive nights of violence alone, more than 875 people were arrested and around 200 police officers were injured.

The opposition had asked the Government to adopt the state of alarm that implies giving more power to the security forces and restricting freedoms.

The last time France declared this exceptional measure was in November 2015, after the jihadist attacks in Paris.

The death of the young Nahel, at a traffic control on Tuesday, captured by surveillance cameras, is at the origin of the protests. Clashes against security forces broke out Tuesday night in Nanterre and early Thursday morning public buildings were damaged and cars set on fire.

The policeman suspected of killing the young man, charged with manslaughter, has been arrested and will remain in custody.
