The far-right party VOX will form part of the Government of the Spanish region of Extremadura, in coalition with the Popular Party (PP), after the regional elections on May 28, the two political forces announced this Friday.
The two parties reached a similar agreement on June 13 for the regional government of the Valencian Community and have been together since 2022 in the executive branch of Castilla y León.
PP and VOX reached an agreement in Extremadura that guarantees the popular presidency of the regional government, despite the fact that the socialist party (PSOE) was the most voted in the elections.
VOX, for its part, will be in charge of Forest Management and the Rural World, according to a statement from the two parties, which ensures that the “programmatic agreement” in Extremadura includes 60 measures “focused on the priorities of Extremadura families and on combating unemployment , poverty, lack of opportunities and depopulation”.
In the case of the Valencian Community and Castilla y León, VOX assumed the vice presidency of the regional governments, in addition to other portfolios in the executives and the presidency of the autonomous parliaments.
The agreement announced this Friday materializes a withdrawal of the leader of the PP in Extremadura, María Guardiola, who will be the president of the regional government.
Last week, María Guardiola said that she would not allow the VOX party, “which denies violence against women”, which “dehumanizes immigrants” and which “throws the LGBTI flag into the trash” to enter the region’s executive branch. [símbolo da luta contra a descriminação com base na orientação sexual]”.
“I believe in an inclusive, modern, respectful, permeable, supportive and responsible Extremadura and I believe in an Extremadura where love does not admit nuances,” he said, 10 days ago.
Guardiola initially had the support of the national leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, who later, however, urged her to reach a “quick” agreement for a change in Extremadura, a border region with Portugal (with Beira Interior and Alentejo). , which was led by the socialists.
After the elections on May 28, PP and VOX have also reached an agreement for the Popular Party to govern in the Balearic Islands, with the abstention of deputies from the far-right party, which in this case will not enter the regional executive.
Negotiations between the two parties continue to make possible the PP governments in Aragon and Murcia.
In some cases, VOX, with agreements with the PP, has already secured the presidencies of the regional parliaments, as happened in Aragon and the Balearic Islands.
Due to the victory of the right and the advance of the extreme right in the municipal and regional elections on May 28, the president of the Spanish Government, the socialist Pedro Sánchez, called early national parliaments for July 23.
The pre-election campaign has been dominated by the PP’s agreements with VOX and, in the last week, by the statements and profiles of people that the far-right party has chosen to preside over the different regional parliaments or for the government of the Valencian Community. Community, who are the deniers of vaccines and climate change, anti-abortion activists or those who say that gender violence does not exist.
The polls for the national elections on July 23 give the victory to the PP without an absolute majority, which it could achieve with an agreement with VOX.
