Bolsonaro says he was “stabbed in the back” when he was deemed ineligible

The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, said this Friday that he received a “stab in the back” when the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) considered him ineligible until 2030, marking a parallel with the episode in which he was stabbed during a campaign action. . in 2018.

“In politics -this phrase is not mine- nobody kills and nobody dies. They tried to kill me here in Juiz de Fora not long ago, they stabbed me in the stomach. Today they stabbed me in the back with the disqualification for abuse of political power,” the former Brazilian president told reporters after hearing the decision of the seven judges in Belo Horizonte.

The former official will now “talk to the lawyers” to try to understand what he can do with the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in this case, but he guarantees that “it is not the end of the right in Brazil.”

After the fourth session of the trial that began on June 22, five TSE judges voted in favor of disqualifying Jair Bolsonaro and two voted against. He was convicted of abuse of political power and misuse of the media when he was holding a meeting with foreign ambassadors during the presidential campaign in which he ran for, and lost to, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

“I think it was the first conviction for abuse of political power. It is a crime without corruption,” Bolsonaro also told reporters.

Alexandre de Moraes, president of the TSE and a Federal Supreme Court judge handling several cases related to the attempted coup in Brasilia, was the last to vote, with a scathing speech against Jair Bolsonaro.

Public resources, live broadcast, “full attacks on electoral justice”, “replication of fraudulent news” with the intention of “influencing and convincing voters that they would be victims of a great conspiracy by the judiciary”, began by saying the president of the TSE, “all the production was made so that TV Brasil would broadcast and the existing disinformation machine would multiply the disinformation to reach the electorate,” denounced the judge.

Regarding the transition of power to Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro defended that “it was done in absolute normality”, but regretted what happened at the beginning of 2023, with the invasion of the Three Powers, in Brasilia.

“I left Brazil on the 30th and unfortunately it happened on January 8. Anyone who talks about a coup in January does not know what a coup is, with all due respect, they are politically illiterate. Brazil on its back ”, he criticized. Jair Bolsonaro, who argues that “the people who did this have to assume their responsibilities.”
