Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said this Friday that several leaders of Latin American countries are opposed to his participation in the summit between the European Union (EU) and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC), scheduled for July In Brussels.
Zelensky made this revelation in an interview with various Spanish media, including news agency Efe.
‘Some Latin American leaders blocked’ the possibility for the Ukrainian head of state to attend the summit.
According to Efe, Zelensky’s spokesman Sergi Nikiforov explained that Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez proposed “to coordinate efforts so that Ukraine’s position is presented” at the summit.
Volodymyr Zelensky thought it was “very important” that his point of view was heard in Latin America, adding that Sánchez helped Ukraine “very much” to promote the so-called Ukrainian formula of peace among Latin American countries.
Zelensky also expressed his willingness to visit Spain and Latin America.
An initial version of this information indicated that Latin American leaders had blocked Sánchez’s invitation to Zelensky to participate in the EU-CELAC summit.
In a note to editors, the spokesman for the president of Ukraine clarified that “Zelensky did not want to say that he had received a formal invitation” from Sánchez to the summit, as that prerogative belongs to the president of the European Council.
The summit between the EU and CELAC will take place on 17 and 18 July, in the context of the Spanish Presidency of the EU, which starts on Saturday 1 July.
