Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday accused “certain” Western partners of delaying plans regarding plans to train Ukrainian pilots to fly fighter jets.
“Do you have any idea when Ukraine will be able to get the F-16s?” Volodymyr Zelensky told reporters, referring to the West.
“There is no schedule for the training missions. I think some partners are stalling. Why do they do it? I don’t know,” he said, while The President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, currently visiting kyiv, was by his side.
A green light from the United States
The Ukrainian army is limited in its counteroffensive by a lack of weapons, particularly combat aircraft, estimated its commander-in-chief Valery Zalouzhny in an interview published on Friday by the Washington Post.
“It pisses me off,” he says of Westerners who complain about kyiv’s slow progress against the Russians, while wishing they would hand over weapons more quickly.
To compete with Russian air power, Ukraine needs the promised F-16 fighter jets as soon as possible, the commanding general insists.
Among Ukraine’s Western allies, the UK has come out in favor of handing over fighter jets before the US gave the green light last May to supply F-16 jets.
