Hundreds gather at the Nanterre mosque for Nahel’s funeral ceremonies

Hundreds of people gather in front of the Great Mosque of Nanterre to participate in the funeral ceremonies for Nahel Merzouk, 17, shot on Tuesday by a police officer, and whose murder sparked a wave of violent protests.

In front of the mosque, from 1:00 p.m. local time (12:00 p.m. in Lisbon), two long queues began to form, on one side men, on the other women waiting to enter the temple.

The funeral events were scheduled for 1:50 p.m. local time (12:50 p.m. in Lisbon), but the security apparatus delayed the start.

Outside, across avenue Georges Clémenceau, in Nanterre, on the outskirts of Paris, hundreds of locals, some carrying bouquets of flowers, wear white T-shirts, demanding “justice for Nahel.”

Mosque officials warn people trying to capture images with mobile phones, including bystanders, not to do so.

The same warning is made to journalists. Nahel Merzouk, 17, was killed Tuesday morning by a police officer after he allegedly disobeyed an order to stop the vehicle he was driving.

The death of the 17-year-old unleashed a wave of protests, accompanied by violence in the streets of Nanterre and vandalism of establishments, which spread to Paris and other cities.
