Covid-19: Morocco lifts its sanitary restrictions at the borders

A remarkable improvement has been observed in the health situation of the kingdom. This measure aims to definitively reactivate the tourism industry.

The Moroccan authorities have decided to end the sanitary restrictions imposed at the borders to prevent the spread of Covid-19, the National Airports Office (ONDA) announced this Friday. This measure, which responds to a very clear improvement in the pandemic situation, has been in force since Friday.

It must help definitively reactivate the tourism industry, which has been greatly affected by two years of health crisis.

“Following the decision of the Moroccan authorities, the sanitary restrictions (PCR or Vaccine Pass) to enter Moroccan territory are lifted from today,” ONDA wrote on its Twitter account.

“Only the duly completed passenger health card must be presented” and delivered on arrival at a Moroccan airport, he adds.

A noticeable improvement in health status

Almost six months have passed since travelers wishing to travel to Morocco had to present a vaccination card or the negative result of a PCR test that was less than 72 hours old, an already obsolete measure.

According to the Ministry of Health, Covid-19 infections have decreased in recent weeks and the situation is now characterized by a very low spread of the virus throughout the kingdom.

Of 36 million inhabitants, more than 23.4 million people have received a second dose of the vaccine, and almost 7 million the third, since the appearance of the virus in Morocco on March 2, 2020. A total of 16,278 patients have died by Covid-19. 19

The tourism industry recovers

Economically, the closure of Morocco’s borders has hit hard the tourism, hotel and restaurant industry, a vital sector for the country’s economy.

But since the reopening of Moroccan airspace in February, tourism has been able to start up again.

According to ONDA, Moroccan airports received more than 12 million passengers during the first eight months of the year, which represents a recovery rate of 74% compared to the same period in 2019, before the pandemic.
