kyiv accuses Russia of kidnapping the director of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant

Ukraine accused Russia on Saturday of having kidnapped the director of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest in Europe, hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin formalized the annexation of that Ukrainian region.

State-owned Energoatom, which runs Ukraine’s nuclear power plants, said Russian troops stopped Ihor Murashov’s car on Friday afternoon, blindfolded him and took him to an unknown location.

“His detention endangers the security of Ukraine and Europe’s largest nuclear power plant,” Energoatom president Petro Kotin was quoted as saying by the US news agency AP.

Kotin demanded Murashov’s immediate release.

Russia has not yet ruled on the accusation, as has the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has technicians at the plant, according to AP.

Much of the information about the ongoing war in Ukraine published by the two sides cannot be immediately confirmed independently.

Ukraine has four nuclear power plants in operation, with a total of 15 reactors, six of which are in Zaporizhia, which is occupied by Russian troops.

The situation at the Zaporizhia plant has caused great concern since the start of the war, with the Ukrainians and Russians accusing each other of attacks on the complex, which could lead to a nuclear disaster.

In 1986, when it was part of the former Soviet Union, Ukraine suffered the most serious nuclear accident in the world, which occurred at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Russian President Vladimir Putin signed the Zaporizhia integration treaty into the Russian Federation on Friday, along with the Donetsk, Luhansk and Kherson regions.

The decision followed wartime referendums whose legitimacy was rejected by Ukraine and the international community.

Russia used the same method to annex Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014.

The current conflict in Ukraine was triggered by the Russian invasion of the neighboring country on February 24 this year.

The number of civilian and military casualties from the war in Ukraine is unknown, but various sources, including the UN, have stated that it will be very high.
