The president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, said on Thursday that the war in Ukraine may have “temporary relief”, but not the end of the causes and the “great opportunity for new phases” of this global conflict.
“We know that the war in Ukraine is not a European war, but a global war involving three major geopolitical actors: Russia, the United States of America and the European Union”said the head of state in his speech at the Estoril conferences, which started today at the Nova School Business & Economics (SBE), in Cascais, an intervention in English.
In the analysis of Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, “the immediate result of the war, if it comes, may be a temporary relief, but not the end of the causes and the high probability of new phases of the same global conflict.”
“We know that Russia wants to regain global power and not just maintain a strong regional power. We know that the United States wants to show that it is a superpower,” he emphasized.
According to the president of the republic, “China wants to buy time” after failing to contain the pandemic and economic recovery, also with the intention of “convincing some non-European countries that it can be aligned ideologically and politically at the same time” with Russia and an impartial arbiter in a war declared by Russia itself”.
Leaving the conferences, questioned by journalists about these ideas left in his speech, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa explained that he limited himself “to drawing attention to the fact that this year, in addition to the climate challenge, in addition to the challenge of digital and energy”, there is “a very current problem, namely what the balance of forces in the world will be after the war and what will be the whole of the effects of the pandemic period, which in many cases has not yet ended”.
And then he said that the big problem is called inclusion. The world is becoming more and more unequal, freedom is fundamental, democracy is fundamental, but unfortunately they are not enough because freedom and democracy with social, economic and political inequalities and with a situation where it is always the poorest and the most suffering who suffer the most, this means that the great reflection must go through inclusion this year,” he defended.
Since the idea of these conferences is to debate “a new stimulus, a new dream, a new will”, for the head of state “this is mainly for the young”.
“The elderly can help, they can support, but there is either a leadership of change by the young or societies, especially European, old, old, aging and it’s not that the older or more experienced have no role to play. , but change comes from youth,” he justified.
