At least 15 people, including a baby and a toddler, were killed in a road accident on Sunday night when a minibus, taxi and a truck collided in eastern South Africa, South African authorities said Monday known.
The accident occurred in the city of Aberdeen, Eastern Cape province, when the lorry collided with an animal crossing the road and the driver lost control of the heavy vehicle, said provincial transport department spokesman Unathi Binqose . quoted by the local press.
When the truck driver tried to regain control of the vehicle, the trailer overturned and crushed the minibus taxi.
All passengers in the taxi died, including a two-month-old baby and a two-year-old boy.
The driver, who was traveling from the opposite direction, escaped with minor injuries, according to the same source.
“It was a very rare accident (…) which unfortunately took the lives of the fifteen people who were on board this minibus”, explained Binqose.
The spokesperson also called on “road users and all those who can contribute to road safety to do so”.
Binqose addressed “not only road users, but also animal owners who contribute to so many accidents in the province”.
Police are investigating the case for possible “involuntary manslaughter”.
