French mayors expressed, on Monday, their repudiation of the current wave of urban violence after an attack on the home of one of them, after almost a week of nighttime riots that seem to lose strength.
“Since Tuesday, the nights have been difficult for the residents. The successive acts of violence are unacceptable,” said the mayor of Nanterre, in the west of Paris, Patrick Jarry, who again called for calm.
The riots began on Tuesday night, after the death of Nahel, a 17-year-old boy shot at point-blank range during a strike operation. The moment the teenager was killed was recorded on video.
On Sunday morning, in the aftermath of this wave of violence, 3,200 detainees were registered, more than 700 security force agents injured, about five thousand vehicles set on fire, ten thousand boxes of cigarettes burned and about a thousand buildings damaged, the Ministry announced. inland. Despite a decrease in the number of detainees at dawn this Monday, to 157, there is still a strong police mobilization. President Emmanuel Macron has called for a “large-scale police presence” to be maintained on the streets.
