The Doctors Without Borders (MSF) ship rescued 196 migrants on Tuesday morning in four operations and Italian authorities designated the port of Marina di Carrara, in northern Italy, three days away, for disembarkation.
During the night, the Geo Barents, with the coordination of the Italian authorities, carried out four rescues and currently has 196 migrants on board, including 47 unaccompanied minors, 16 women and a baby.
“Following the four rescue operations carried out overnight, the Italian authorities designated Marina di Carrara as the port of disembarkation for the 196 survivors,” the non-governmental organization said on social media.
“The journey of these people is not over yet. They still have three days of sailing left because the Italian authorities have designated Marina di Carrara, 1,025 kilometers away, as the port of disembarkation,” laments MSF.
The disembarkation of migrants continues, although it has slowed down in recent hours, which has allowed the reception center on the Italian island of Lampedusa to be emptied, where some 430 migrants are currently located, after more than 3,000 last weekend .
The Italian Minister of the Interior, Matteo Piantedosi, and the European Commissioner for the Interior, Ylva Johansson, will visit the island today, the arrival point for tens of thousands of immigrants from North Africa.
