Monday was the hottest day on record

Monday was the warmest day on record in world terms, surpassing the average bar of 17 degrees Celsius (ºC) for the first time, according to initial measurements taken on Tuesday by a North American agency.

The average daily air temperature on the Earth’s surface on July 3 was measured at 17.01°C by a service dependent on the US Atmosphere and Oceans Agency (NOAA).

This value surpasses the previous daily record (16.92°C) of July 24, 2022, according to data from NOAA’s National Environmental Prediction Centers, which dates back to 1979.

The air temperature, which fluctuates between about 12ºC and 17ºC in terms of daily averages throughout the year, was 16.20ºC in early July between 1979 and 2000.

This record, which has yet to be confirmed by other measures, could soon be surpassed when the northern hemisphere enters the summer season and average global temperatures generally continue to rise until the end of July or early August.

As early as early June, mean global temperatures were the highest ever recorded in the period by the European Copernicus service, beating previous records by a “substantial margin”.

El Niño phenomenon could lead to “new temperature records”

These observations are likely a harbinger of things to come with the phenomenon called El Niño (O Menino) in Castelhano – generally associated with an increase in global temperatures – supplemented by the effects of climate warming caused by human activity.

On June 8, NOAA had announced the official arrival of El Niño, guaranteeing that “it could lead to new temperature records in some regions.”

In June several records were broken in Asia and the United Kingdom experienced its warmest June on record, while Mexico was criss-crossed by an extreme heat wave.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, a specialized agency of the United Nations, there is a 66% chance that the global average temperature near the surface during a month between 2023 and 2027 will be temporarily 1.5°C higher than pre -industrial level.

The year 2022 was the eighth consecutive year in which the average global temperature was at least one degree higher than the levels observed between 1850 and 1900.
