Urban violence in France has eased since the death of a 17-year-old boy last week by police on the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, according to the Interior Ministry.
A report from the national ministry lists 16 arrests and eight burning or damaged buildings. Seven people were arrested in Paris and the suburbs.
The ministry has so far recorded a total of 202 fires on public roads, including rubbish bins, 159 vehicles set on fire and four attacks on police facilities.
About 45,000 elements of the police and the guard responsible for maintaining public order (gendarmerie) were mobilized on Tuesday evening. There were no injuries, according to the ministry.
On Tuesday, authorities across the country reported that 3,625 people had been placed in police custody, including 1,124 minors, since the riots began. Of them, 990 were presented to the judicial authorities and 380 were arrested.
Nighttime violence began to subside on Sunday.
On Tuesday, President Emmanuel Macron was “cautious” about the prospect of a return to calm in the country, although he said he believed the “peak” of violence had passed.
Macron also announced an “emergency law” for the reconstruction of cities affected by the disturbances, promising financial aid for repairs related to “roads, municipal institutions and schools” and support for the repair of broken video surveillance equipment.
