Four killed in rocket attack on Lviv

A Russian missile strike on a residential building on Thursday killed four people and injured eight in Lviv, western Ukraine, near the border with Poland, the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.

Initially, the city’s mayor, Andriy Sadovyi, reported three deaths in a message published on the Telegram platform, after reporting “eight injured”, including “one person in serious condition”.

Emergency services were mobilized to the site where about 60 apartments and 50 vehicles were damaged.

“There will definitely be an answer,” promised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who shared a video showing the destruction wrought by the attack.

It is the “brutal attack on civilian infrastructure since the start of the war,” Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry wrote in a post on social networks.

The head of the regional administration, Maksym Kozytsky, described the incident as a “direct attack on a residential building” carried out by Russian troops.

In the images shared by Kozytsky, one building appears badly damaged, with part of the upper floors destroyed and windows shattered.

The leader added that the attack started a fire, which was quickly extinguished, causing interruptions to electricity supplies and access to mobile telecommunications.

Despite being several hundred kilometers from the front, Lviv and the surrounding region have been the target of attacks since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which began on February 24, 2022.

On the night of June 19-20 this year, drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) hit “critical infrastructure” in Lviv, Maksym Kozytskyi reported at the time.

Five people were killed in a shooting in a residential area of Velyka Vilchanytsia in the Lviv region in March.
