Lukashenko says Prigozhin is in Russia, not Belarus

The head of the Wagner group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, is in Russia and not in Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko said Thursday.

“He is in Saint Petersburg, not Belarus,” Lukashenko told reporters at a news conference.

The Belarusian president also said that the mercenaries remained in the fields where they had been before the riot against Moscow.

Alexander Lukashenko helped broker a deal that allowed Prigozhin to end the riot on June 24. The deal also allowed Prigozhin and the contract fighters to travel to Belarus.

Lukashenko said last week that Prigozhin was in Belarus.

The Belarusian head of state told international journalists on Thursday, at a press conference in Minsk, that the head of the mercenaries is in St. Petersburg and that the hired fighters are in the “bases” where they were before, without specifying.

The Wagner Group, a company that hires mercenaries, was present in the Russian military campaign in Ukraine, in addition to maintaining contractors in the Central African Republic and Syria.
