Brussels proposes eighth sanctions package in light of new Kremlin escalation

The European Commission on Wednesday proposed an eighth package of sanctions against Russia, in light of the Kremlin’s “new escalation” in its aggression against Ukraine, with the holding of “fraudulent referendums”, partial mobilization and the threat of resorting to nuclear weapons. .

The new EU sanctions package, presented today in Brussels by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the EU High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell, includes a cap on oil price Russian trade restrictions, new trade restrictions to put Russia around €7 billion revenue, a ban on the export of more products to rob the Kremlin of key technologies for the Russian war machine, and an update of the list of persons and entities subject to restrictive measures.

Brussels is also proposing in this new round of sanctions a ban on the provision of European services to Russia and a ban on EU citizens from serving on governing bodies of Russian state-owned companies, arguing that “Russia should not benefit from the knowledge and expertise” of Europeans. .

“Over the past week, Russia has taken the invasion of Ukraine to a new level and we are determined to make the Kremlin pay the price for this further escalation. Today we are proposing a new package of very tough sanctions against Russia.” von der Leyen announced.
