The collapse occurred at 6:10 a.m. local time, and according to information from the fire department, one of the buildings collapsed completely, while the other sustained partial damage.
According to some residents, the building was banned by court order, but began to be improperly reoccupied in 2012.
Firefighters, volunteers and sniffer dogs are participating in the searches. Colonel Robson Roberto said some of the victims who are buried are keeping in contact with the firefighters.
“It’s a job done with the help of the dogs, who have already indicated where the possible victims are. Those who react were easier to locate. We keep these work fronts going, but everything has to be done calmly and carefully, because we want these people get out alive,” he said.
The moment was witnessed by several residents, employees and bystanders on the road. “I work at the bus station, next door. People were buried, there was even a sign on children,” said Jailson Júnior, who witnessed the collapse.
