An attack on a kindergarten in the southern Chinese city of Lianjiang left six dead and one injured, the local government said Monday.
Among the seven victims are “a teacher, two parents and three students,” according to a statement from local authorities.
The suspect was detained, reads the same note, which gave no details about the age or identity of the victims, nor the type of weapon used.
The attack took place at 07:40 (00:40 on Sunday in Lisbon) in the city of Lianjiang, located in Guangdong province, which borders Macau and Hong Kong, according to state media.
Deadly attacks specifically targeting schools have occurred across the country in the past, prompting authorities to step up security in schools.
Perpetrators of similar attacks have been described as mentally ill or as rebelling against society.
Chinese law restricts the sale and possession of firearms, which is why attacks with knives, homemade explosives or deliberate running over are common.
