The snowfall that fell from the early hours of the day in suburbs such as Sandton, Soweto, Roodepoort and Heidelberg was immediately dubbed the “winter miracle” and captured through images and videos on social networks by residents who lack of electricity and low temperatures in South Africa’s economic capital.

“The South African Meteorological Service had not taken into account the development of precipitation in Gauteng province,” SAWS Puseleto Mofokeng told local media.

According to meteorologists, snowfall was expected in the provinces of Mpumalanga, eastern region, and KwaZulu-Natal, southeast of the country, with the heaviest snow still expected to fall in the northern areas of the Eastern Cape, in the extreme south of the country. country. .

“The snow is running in very cold conditions that should last through the end of the week,” said meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela.

The city of Johannesburg, located at over 1,700 meters elevation, has seen sporadic snowfall since the heavy snowfall in 1996, the last in 2012.
