Snowfall recorded since the early hours of the day in suburbs such as Sandton, Soweto, Roodepoort and Heidelberg was immediately dubbed the “winter wonderland” and recorded through images and videos on social media by residents dealing with a lack of electricity. and the low temperatures in the area. economic capital of South Africa.
“The South African Weather Service did not anticipate any precipitation developing in Gauteng province,” SAWS Puseleto Mofokeng told local media.
According to forecasters, snowfall was expected in the eastern provinces of Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal in the southeast of the country, with the heaviest snowfall still expected to occur in the northern parts of the Eastern Cape in the far south. from the country. .
“Snow runs in very cold conditions that should last until the end of the week,” said Meteorologist Lehlohonolo Thobela.
The city of Johannesburg, located at more than 1,700 meters of altitude, has experienced sporadic snowfall since the heavy snowfall of 1996, the previous one in 2012.
