EasyJet cancels almost 2,000 flights this summer

EasyJet revealed on Monday that it had canceled nearly 2,000 flights this summer from its London hub at Gatwick due to difficulties, controller strikes and delays stemming from air traffic congestion.

The low-cost airline canceled, more precisely, “1,700 flights that should have been operated in July, August and September of this year”, which will affect some 180,000 passengers, which is equivalent to “less than a day of flight”. since “more than 90,000 flights should be operated during the peak summer months,” said an EasyJet spokesman, quoted by the financial agency Bloomberg.

In fact, airlines are canceling flights in a “preemptive action” to limit the chaos in air travel, it adds.

In this sense, passengers whose flights are canceled will be transferred to other flights or may be reimbursed by the airlines.

The operational adjustment being made to flights will help reduce challenges stemming from airspace congestion due to the war in Ukraine and air traffic control delays, the same spokesperson said.

EasyJet is not the only airline that has had to reduce its summer schedule.

Ryanair Holdings, Air France-KLM and Deutsche Lufthansa AG have canceled flights citing controller strikes and air traffic congestion.

Aviation is growing as it recovers from the falls derived from the covid-19 pandemic, with July 6 being the busiest in history for commercial aviation worldwide, with 134,386 flights, according to the monitoring portal of FlightRadar24 flights.
