Russia launched a drone strike on Kiev in the early hours of Tuesday, Ukrainian officials said, hours before the start of the NATO summit in Lithuania.
“The enemy attacked Kiev from the air for the second time this month,” Serhiy Popko of the Kiev military administration said in a post on the Telegram social network.
The attack used Iranian-made Shahed drones launched from the south, likely from Russia’s Krasnodar region, he added.
“All air targets detected in the direction of Kiev have been destroyed by our air defenses,” he said, without specifying how many drones were shot down.
Ukraine’s Interior Ministry said the wreckage of the drone was in an undisclosed location in the Kiev region.
Some “private homes have been damaged,” he said, adding that there was no immediate information on the victims.
Remember that Kiev was the target of frequent night air raids in May.
The western port city of Odessa was also the target of a drone strike in the early hours of the morning, according to Sergiy Bratchuk of the local administration. Air defenses were activated, he said, without providing further information.
Air alerts were also reported in the regions of Mykolayiv, Kherson, Kirovograd, Poltava, Sumy and Kharkiv.
On Tuesday at the summit in Vilnuis, Lithuania, NATO leaders will discuss Ukraine’s membership ambitions and the determination of Kiev allies to take on Russia, boosted by a breakthrough in Sweden’s bid to join the EU. the Atlantic Alliance.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is expected to head to the Lithuanian capital to argue that Kiev won the right to join the Atlantic Alliance when the Russian invasion ends.
