Xi Jinping vows to deepen partnership with Russia during a meeting with the parliament leader

Chinese President Xi Jinping assured the leader of the upper house of Russia’s parliament on Tuesday that China will continue to deepen its partnership with Russia at a meeting in Beijing.

“Developing relations between China and Russia is a strategic choice made by both sides based on their respective core interests,” Xi Jinping, quoted by state television CCTV, told Valentina Matviyenko, President of the Council of the Russian Federation , the upper house of parliament in Russia. .

“Thanks to the joint efforts of the two sides, China-Russia relations have reached a healthy and stable pace of development. China is willing to continue working with Russia to develop the comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership, “aimed at promoting the construction of a prosperous, stable and just world,” he added.

The meeting with Matviyenko came on the heels of a four-day visit to Beijing by US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, who met several senior Chinese officials in Beijing, but not Xi Jinping.

Matviyenko, quoted by Russia’s Tass news agency, said Russia would continue to cooperate with Beijing and that it could count on China’s “firm and reliable shoulder”.

Matviyenko, chairman of the Federation Council since 2011, is Russia’s third highest-ranking government official after President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

Chinese media declined to say whether the war in Ukraine was discussed at the meeting.

Matviyenko praised the “highest level in history” of ties between the two countries, saying that the Russian parliament broadly supports the deepening of bilateral cooperation and is ready to continue exchanges and dialogue with the National People’s Congress of China. strengthen, aimed at providing legal guarantees. for the implementation of the consensus between Moscow and Beijing, CCTV reported.

China has significantly improved ties with Russia in recent years.

Beijing has refused to condemn Russia for its invasion of Ukraine and has criticized the imposition of sanctions against Moscow. China sees the partnership with its neighbor as fundamental to opposing the liberal democratic order led by the United States.

Xi noted that during his visit to Moscow last March, he reached an important agreement with Putin on deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership and practical cooperation in various fields between the two countries.

The Chinese leader told Matviyenko that the legislative bodies should make law of both to promote “sustainable and healthy development of cooperation”.
