Germany will supply Ukraine with weapons worth about 700 million euros, German government sources told Agence France Presse on the first day of the NATO summit in Vilnius.
According to the same sources, which were not named, Germany will supply Patriot air defense systems, Marder armored vehicles, Leopard 1 A5 tanks and artillery shells.
Currently the second largest provider of military aid to Ukraine, after the United States, Germany had already announced, on May 13, the supply of arms worth 2.7 billion euros.
Last year, Germany was criticized by kyiv and some of its European partners, especially in Eastern Europe, for “weak” military support for Ukraine.
In recent months, Berlin has intensified its efforts in this field, supplying ammunition, Leopard tanks and air defense systems.
The military offensive launched on February 24, 2022 by Russia in Ukraine has so far caused the flight of more than 14.7 million people -6.5 million internally displaced persons and more than 8.2 million to European countries-, according to the latest data from the UN, which classifies this refugee crisis as the worst in Europe since World War II (1939-1945).
The Russian invasion – justified by Russian President Vladimir Putin as the need to “denazify” and demilitarize Ukraine for Russia’s security – was condemned by the wider international community, which has responded by sending arms to Ukraine and imposing them on Russia in political and economic sanctions.
