The Kremlin claims to be following the NATO summit that began in Vilnius on Tuesday “very closely”, adding Sweden’s entry into the organization has negative consequences for Russia’s security.
This is the Kremlin’s first statement after Turkey agreed on Monday to send Sweden’s accession protocol to the Atlantic Alliance for parliamentary ratification.
This decision will have “negative consequences”, Russian presidency spokesman Dmitry Peskov said, stressing that Russia will take the “expected and planned” measures.
The Kremlin also referred to what it considered the “strongly anti-Russian character” of the summit, in which Ukraine should receive assurances regarding its aspirations to join the organization.
“This is unequivocally an Alliance (Atlantic) summit with a strong anti-Russian character. Russia is seen as an enemy, an adversary, and it is in this perspective that the talks will take place,” stated Dmitri Peskov.
The NATO summit, which began in Lithuania on Tuesday, will focus on supporting Ukraine against the Russian invasion and Sweden’s entry into the Atlantic Alliance, as well as strengthening the allies’ military capabilities against future threats.
Strengthening the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capabilities is one of the key themes of the summit, which brings together the 31 current members to analyze a review of the military organizational model and new regional plans. – a plan whose relevance was reinforced by the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began in February last year.
The summit will also serve to discuss the strengthening of investment by the Allies, to respond to this plan and to address Ukraine’s needs in its war effort.
