The Kremlin claims to be following the NATO summit that began Tuesday in Vilnius “very closely” and adds that Sweden’s entry into the organization has “negative consequences” for Russia’s security.
This is the first statement from the Kremlin after Turkey on Monday agreed to send Sweden’s accession protocol to the Atlantic Alliance for parliamentary ratification.
This decision will have “negative consequences”, said the spokesman for the Russian Presidency, Dmitri Peskov, who stressed that Russia will take the “expected and foreseen” measures.
The Kremlin also referred to what it considered the “strong anti-Russian character” of the summit, in which Ukraine should receive guarantees regarding its aspirations to join the organization.
“This is unequivocally an (Atlantic) Alliance summit with a strong anti-Russian character. Russia is seen as an enemy, an adversary, and it is in this perspective that the discussions will take place,” Dmitri Peskov also told reporters.
The NATO summit, which began this Tuesday in Lithuania, focuses on supporting Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion and on Sweden’s accession to the Atlantic Alliance, as well as on strengthening the military resources of the allies against future threats. .
Strengthening the Alliance’s deterrence and defense capabilities is one of the main themes of the summit, which brings together the 31 current members to consider a review of the military organization model and new regional plans, a plan whose relevance was strengthened by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Started in February of last year.
The summit will also serve to discuss the strengthening of investment by the allies, to respond to this plan, as well as to meet the needs of Ukraine in its war effort.
